Medical Advisory Committee

Medical Advisory Committee:

Neurologists, Ophthalmologists, Nurses and other allied health professionals join the MGA Medical Advisory Committee because they want to support the work of the MGA. The Committee compliments the Board of Director’s effectiveness by bringing unique knowledge, skills, credibility and recommendations. They also act as ambassadors and assist with fundraising aspects of the association.

Richard Barohn, MD: Chair of the Department of Neurology at the Universityof Kansas Medical Center

Dr. Barohn is the chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He also serves as the director of the General Clinical Research Center & of the Heartland Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at KUMC.

Emmanuel Daon, MD: Thoracic surgeon at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Dr. Daon is a thoracic surgeon at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He received his MD degree from Louisiana State University and degree in Thoracic surgery from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Daon specializes in cardiac and thoracic surgery and his areas of interest include minimally invasive surgery and resident education.

Mazen Dimachkie, MD: Director of the Neuromuscular Disease Section & theElectromyography Laboratory at the University of Kansas Medical Center

Dr. Dimachkie is a Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Director of the Neuromuscular Disease Section & the Electromyography Laboratory. He holds the distinguished title of Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.

Vernita Hairston-Mitchell, MD: Staff Neurologist, Truman Medical Center

Dr. Hairston-Mitchell received her BA in biochemistry at Harvard University and medical doctorate degree at the University of Maryland. After her residency at Case Western Reserve, she completed a clinical neuromuscular fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and neuro-rehabilitation at the University of Maryland.

Larry Hollenbeck, MD: Neurologist in practice with Northland Neurological Associates

Dr. Hollenbeck is a neurologist in practice with Northland Neurological Associates and has a special interest in neuromuscular disease. He
completed his residency at the University of Kansas and has practiced in North Kansas City since 1986.

Dr. Leonard Lausten, DDS

Dr. Lausten specializes in dentistry for individuals with compromising medical conditions including Myasthenia Gravis at Kansas University Medical Center. He has a lengthy career in clinical and academic dentistry with faculty appointments at numerous schools of dentistry.

 

Eric May, MD: Anesthesiologist with Wesport Anesthesia Services & person living with MG

Dr. May is an anesthesiologist at Westport Anesthesia at Saint Luke’s Hospital – Kansas City. He obtained his medical degree from Creighton University and
conducted his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. May was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis in 1995.

April McVey, MD: Neuromuscular Specialist with the University of Kansas Medical Center

Dr. McVey was the Neurology Consultant to the United States Air Force Surgeon General. Upon completion of her military career, she entered private practice and later joined the faculty at the University of Kansas.

 

Mamatha Pasnoor, MD: Neuromuscular Specialist with the University of Kansas Medical Center

Dr. Pasnoor is a neurologist & Assistant Professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She sees patients at the MG Clinic and is a researcher on the characteristics of MUsK Myasthenia Gravis. Dr. Pasnoor attended medical school in India and attended the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Michael Schwartzman, DO: Neurologist with Neurological Consultants of Kansas City

Dr. Schwartzman is a neurologist with Neurological Consultants of Kansas City. His special interest is in neuro-muscular disease & has directed the MG Clinic at two office locations since 2003. He is Assistant Clinical Professor at UMKC and part of the Brain & Stroke Institute at Saint Luke’s in Kansas City. Dr. Schwartzman completed his Neurology residence at the University of Minnesota and EMG Neuromuscular Disease Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

Diana Wilmoth, RN:

Diana Wilmoth is a former Nursing Administrator & current Volunteer Coordinator of the MG Clinic at Neurological Consultant’s. She is a former MGA Board Member and President of the Board, Coordinator of MGA’s annual auction and conducts public speaking on behalf of MGA. Diana was awarded Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America’s 2008 Nurse of the Year and was awarded the STACKHOUSE AWARD from the MGA. Diana is living with MG.

Dr. Billi Wallace:

Dr. Billi Wallace is a neuro-opthalmologist with Sabates Eye Center with a special interest in Myasthenia Gravis. She received her MD degree with distinction from the University of Missouri Kansas City and neuro-ophthalmology residency with the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Wallace is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Ophthalmology at UMKC School of Medicine.
